A ride inside a small RC car!

Ever wanted to take a ride inside a small , cheap RC car? Now it’s your chance! I got this baby for 10 Euros from a chinese street salesman. It’s 1/16 scale, works on 6 AA batteries, 27 MHz 2-channel controller, and is strong enough to carry a 120 gr. camera without losing speed! The controls are really simplistic, You can either go full ahead, stop, full backwards, and steer steeply left/right. The electronics and mechanics are a bit crude but do their job. Back in the 90s, even such a simple 2-channel RC car was very expensive, and with the equivalent of 10 Eur. you couldn’t even buy a single-channel RC car. It also has front lights and back lights, which I may upgrade to low-consumption ultra-bright LEDs. They make it pretty fun in the dark though, and you can see their light in the night driving sequences (I only wish my camera was a bit more sensitive though…) All in all, I’d say it’s really “value for money”, and great fun to have/mod!

When buying RC tires, its critical that you buy one that has the right hub that fits the truck; learn more tips on RC car tires in this free hobby video on remote control car racing. yeh, but steering servo would leave as is, moght find a way to hook it up to the spektrum receiver

  2. Velktron says:

Heh, the ESC alone will be worth multiple times the car (but then again, the LEDs I added are worth a good fraction of it) ;-)

Shedding weight wouldn’t help it much with its current engine/gearing/primitive stop/go brushed “ESC”, but with a proper ESC it would be a different story. The real problem would be finding a brushless motor about the size of a 370 brushed motor, and wiring an ESC to the primitive control board. Practically everything but the chassis would need to be replaced :-D

  3. angrygunsmith says:

cute but its craving a brushless enigne and lipo mod in it, i might leave the steering as it is.

  4. Velktron says:

Mostly acceleration. If you drive without too many stops and gos, you won’t see much difference.

Hmmmm my Jazz HDV 178 weighs reatively 200 grams because i picked up a 1:16 scale rc car and I’m planning to try the camera on the car. Hopefully it dosn’t drain speed.

  6. Velktron says:

Certainly, I practically glued a similar camera on top of the car’s roof for this video. The car itself is almost 0.5 kg in weight, it won’t mind 100-200 gr extra. For anything heavier than that though, I’d prefer towing.

  7. Nucleartreasure says:

Could the car support the weight of a Jazz HDV178 camera?

  8. jollis5 says:

u need to trim it :D

  9. Zblj1987 says:

  12. KamakazieIdiot says:

ok thankyou my harddrive is 500 gigs so even the sims 2 wont put a dent in it :)

  13. Velktron says:

Again the first song is a rendition of “Popcorn”. Second one is “Elusium” (try searching for Elysium.mod) and the third one is “Nim” (try searching for Nim.mod). Get winamp to play them. They should be small files around 200-300 KB :-)

  14. KamakazieIdiot says:

hmm whats the song in the background it sounds good nd is gonna bug me for a while if i dont find out

  15. Velktron says:

Well, I used some .MOD files for the soundtrack, first song is “Popcorn”, second is “Elysium” and the third one is “Nim” . As for the car…they aren’t exactly hard to find, and this particular one is a quite low-end model you can even find from flea markets.

  16. 0mrtn0 says:

what´s the name of that song?, by the way how do i get one of those cars?

  17. kiakun says:

i got mine for 5 us dollars quite cheap

  18. Velktron says:

I’m upgrading it by installing always-on LEDs instead of nasty transistor-driven incandescent bulbs. This should leave a bit more juice for the driving motor, and the light during night scenes will be totally better.

  19. Velktron says:

It will have a better lighting system veeeery soon ;-) Stay tuned for more.
