1/5th scale series Part 3/11- Cost of Nitro/ Elec/ Gas

Check out Squirrels forum! forums.thetoyz.com This is the 5th scale series. Basically, I wanted to address all of the questions that I get about this scale. THIS IS ALL IN A PLAY LIST! SEE MY PROFILE FOR MORE DETAILS. This is video 3 of 11. It Which kit is cheaper- the nitro engine kit, the electric brushless setup, or the gas 5th scale. You will be surprised at how quickly the costs rack up and just how cheap a 5th scale can be long term. Also in this series are Vid 1 Tuning Vid 2 Is this scale right for you? Vid 3 Cost of nitro, electric, and gas. Vid 4 Engine assembly Vid 5 3rd channel failsafes/ kill switches Vid 6 Oil and fuel mixture Vid 7 Recommended upgrades Vid 8 Waterproofing the kit Vid 9 Engine break in Vid 10 Which kit is right for you? 5B, FG, or RedCat Vid 11 Battery assembly

Video Rating: 4 / 5

I get asked all the time by people entering into the hobby “I want a reliable kit. Which is better? Exceed, Himoto, redcat??” and I do not have an answer as I have never owned a 1/10th scale nitro buggy. However, I decided that with the economy where it is that it might be good to compare two of them. I bought a exceed and a himoto. THe following series is a unbiased account of how the buggies perform and which one I recommend.

i run anitro engine for 15 gallons but it begins to lose more and more compression and topspeed whats the price of a new piston and sleeve ??? $50 ???

  2. Squirrelod says:

@ballhawk210 Buy the 5b. As for the fuel type, the manual will show you what grade gas you can put in your system. I also have a vid in this series on fuel/ oil mixtures that also goes over gas grade as well. Please be sure to check it out =)

  3. ballhawk210 says:

im going to buy a baja or rally truck of nitrorcx.com or some other website but they both run on gas but i dont no if its a certian type of gas or just regular gas i can buy from a gas station like pertro canada can u help me

  4. 888traxxasman888 says:

what do u think is the better buggy the 5b or the rampage tt?

  5. douhnutz says:

LOL or you can spend around 750 for a Bl Revo and go around 45mph with stock batteries (:

  6. videomonkey2009 says:

personally I use a flux capacitor powered by last nights curry and beer. Just lights up the road man.

  7. RCBlade66 says:

hey squireel which ould u rather prefer? gas, nitro or electric???

  8. Squirrelod says:

    Hi-

I took the values as someone getting in to the hobby or to the electric side. They will need a charger. I recommend a good charger and they are at least 75 to 120. Lipos, you will want dual 3s for the e revo and at least 5,000 mah. You can buy budget lipos, and people have opinions on those. I buy zippy myself. You can also buy MaxAmps. I highly doubt that you can get a maxamps set for less than 110.

9 months ago, when the vid was made, e revos were 630.

  9. kismo94 says:

@eb4jimmy a lot more expensive but more reliable

  10. kismo94 says:

    gas all the way

  11. MrEmiliobike says:

my brother had a traxxas revo nitro 3.3 os engine and he has had it for more then 3 years and he never repair nothing to it and he ran it for some good long 2 to3 hours just on refills … but dont ask me about my car still trying ti tune my nitro its a xtm xt2 and my brother mess with it now dosnt want to turn on :@

  12. shreader327 says:

plus nitro glow plugs can range from 4-6 bucks. changing them about 4 times per gallon which is roughly 30 bucks.. plus buying a good rechargeable glow charger is about 20 bucks.. plus they can be a challenge to tune. .

  13. mattio79 says:

    hobbycityDOTcom Turnigy 5000mah, 3s under $40/pack x2=$80

mine are very very reliable, i run 4s in a emaxx 3905 with mmm/2200(XL) nand have for 50 HARD cycles ( burnouts, speed runs, bashing, doughnuts etc.) my 2s 20c 5000mah were $19.79 each +$18 shipping

  14. vstrok says:

I would love to own a 5B…but don’t have enough storage space…damn!! LOL

  15. vstrok says:

What 6s setup to you recommend in a Flux without breaking the bank? Maxamps is way out of my budget right now. Also, could I get away with a 22t pinion?

    Thanks

  16. Squirrelod says:

Yes, you have a point. But, for as many people that I have seen get a high end RC over time (like ourselves) I have also seen new people want the biggest and baddest off the bat.

Also, for some, upgrades in equipment are needed.

It really varies from person to person =)

  17. vstrok says:

Here’s my thing…most people that would get into these “higher end” R/C’s…namely the Flux….would have been in the hobby for some time already…like myself. Therefore, like myself, already had a charger and LiPo’s lying around, which saved me that $350-$400 extra cost.

  18. abracing199 says:

    more
    by quite a bit

  19. eb4jimmy says:

how expensive are parts for 1/5 gas compared to 1/8 nitro?

  20. forrest225 says:

I love all of them, but I prefer gas.

  21. forrest225 says:

I’d go with an electric. Maybe a brushless with NiHm battery. That gives you decent power, but without the lipo fuss and price :D

The slash is very popular, and fairly inexpensive. Check that out.

  22. jmey107 says:

well, the u can’t go wrong with the brushless e-revo, i dont know much about the flux, and i have a t-maxx and its great and i heard the e-maxx is too.

  23. madseeg says:

not really price sensitive. just want something reliable that i can toss off jumps and has a low cust of running

  24. jmey107 says:

e-maxx or flux, whats ur budget?

  25. madseeg says:

    here’s my dilemma
I have a savage XL and i’m tired of how much a PITA it is

i want to go savage FLUX, Traxxas E-Maxx or Redcat rampate.. Squirrel turned me onto the REDCAT

    i don’t care about speed

what i want is longevity in run time, durability and cost.

    what is the recomendation

  26. Squirrelod says:

@atvdoctor And in reply to the equal, that is why I explained that I chose the two “best” 1/10th scales that each side had to offer. In addition, these were the two kits, by name, that I received questions about non-stop.

Did they have to be equal? Nope. I am answering specific questions from people. And at the same time, these were the it 1/10th scales from each.

You may not like the criteria but the above is why I did it. No BS about it.

Im just explaining the logic behind the choices.

  27. atvdoctor says:

@Squirrelod I believe you may have misunderstood my intent. I agree 100% the himoto you tested was the better buggy. better yes, equal no

  28. Squirrelod says:

@atvdoctor I took the “best” 1/10th scale exceed and the “best” 1/10th scale Himoto (at the time) and compared the two. That is what I compared as people asked me what was better below the $200 mark for entry level RC. Himoto increased their quality but Exceed has not, and still has not, increased the quality on their 1/10th scale entry levels.

Call BS all you want. The above is the criteria as mentioned through out this series and it answers the entry level question– what to buy.

  29. atvdoctor says:

I”ve watched alot of your videos (learned alot) but i need to call BS on this one. these are not similar buggies so why compare these 2 (hum i wonder) maybe your mind was made up long before put it on film? now if you actually wanted to do an equal comparison you would have used the himoto syclone which is basically the same buggy and only $20 difference!!

  30. austinkx09 says:

where did you buy the himoto?

  31. IbzSolja1 says:

himoto is a little baja 5b!

  32. harddriver911 says:

I own a 1/10 exceed forza buggy. I ran it maybe only 40 hours or less and I blew my rear end, had to replace the rear t-bone, gears, steering arms. Also I had my transmission go out. But at the same time exceed is good for new people due to the fact it teaches you to how to fix things and the knowledge if a high dollar kit breaks what to look for. Im saving up for a jato 3.3.

  33. offspringfanman96 says:

only get an exceed with “mad” in the vehicle’s name.

  34. omfgg3tlost says:

i blew the gears in both

  35. omfgg3tlost says:

i dont really think there is much of a diference between the two i own a exceed and a himmoto they both suck

  36. JDREADD08 says:

ive a cuople ov the fastrax ftx rampages exactly the same do u not find that the c hubs break a lot and how complicated is it to get to the battery box and reciver housing ??

  37. hbxhpikyosho says:

some of the Himoto, Exceed, HiSpeed, Amax, Windhobby, Redcat etc. is exactly the same thing…

  38. ThePhiltastic says:

The Himoto one is a T2M car. It’s from a french manufacturer, which is very popular in Europe.
But Himot’s better all the way.

  39. devinpooopzz says:

ive done some looking and the himoto is $260 and the exceed is $115

  40. kinkrider88 says:

so which one is better cause i think i might get the exceed

  41. buttdud1122 says:

did u watch the video? and friends of mine are always having problems with their’s

  42. whyatfencer says:

I got an exceed forza and I smashed against a curb sideways going about 30mph and the only thing that broke was the driveshafts on that side. I think that they are a good beginner buggy. the servos are weak and I just striped out the driveshafts. I’m going to get a team associated mgt 4.6. Something with a little more power and suspension.

  43. zendell37 says:

Also, how do the engines look. Seem to be the same design? I know a couple exceeds and himotos come with the same size and letters. Some designs seem to be the same as well, just wondering if the engines share the same blood.

  44. zendell37 says:

What are the speed differences? I’ve got an exceed forza which is, I think, what your specimen is. Mine took a from full speed drift into a curb and a 30 foot full throttle accelerate into a metal door only bending the front bumper and severing an on/off switch wire. I don’t like where the pull is on the exceed. Anyway, thanks Squirrel, keep up the good work.

  45. bigbig5000 says:

umm i got a hooby shop at my city i got a Exceed and the exceed they had for sale didnt have week gear the put metal gears and all the ones they had and it waz about $145

  46. dodgerules889 says:

Acually they are not. Some models are known to have a few defective parts. Primerily, the rear wheel hubs. The performance of these cars is pretty good, and there are lots of available upgrades you can make.

  47. MauricioGomezPino says:

As i was telling to spencerpalmer15 i had the Exceed and brake a lot of stuff but as you say it also gave me expirience and i hope i learned something out of it! Now i bought a Jato, it hasnt been delivered hope i ike it!

  48. MauricioGomezPino says:

Im still watting for my Jato to be delivered! So yeah you are really paying for a bunch of junk and a debt in the future!! So yeah i think you should get the himoto or just spend more money and youll get a car that has more aluminum parts, that you can trust that wont breake that easy and youll get more speed and more fun!! Let me know if these helped you!

  49. MauricioGomezPino says:

Hey Spencerpalmer51! Im gonna tell you what happend to me, and i wished i had seen these videos before! I got into the hobbie and the first car i bought was the Exceed and every time I ran it I broke something and i began buying the spare parts and spending money on the car, but with time I got bored of all of that things until I had the problem that the engine stoped when i gave it full throtle fast! So i decided to gave it in, but gave the hobbie a second chance and bought the Traxxas Jato 3.3

  50. giebelmaster1 says:

Exceed RC cars are a piece of crap I bought a buggy from them and the servos stop working within a couple hours of running it I will never buy from them again
